How often should you be dusting
I’ll be honest—dusting is one of my least favorite chores. In a recent Instagram live, someone asked me how often I dust. My answer? At most, once a week for everyday surfaces. But deeper dusting? That depends on the area.
Here’s my general dusting schedule:
Ceiling fans – Monthly: This dust-cleaning tool makes this task super easy to do.
Side tables – Every week to week and a half
Chandeliers (especially the big ones!) – I use a DIY cleaning spray every six months for this.
Dining room side table – Weekly
- Your dusting needs depend on your home! Ask yourself:
- Do you wear shoes inside?
- Do you use an air purifier?
- Do you open windows often?
- Do you change HVAC filters monthly?
- Do you live in the city, suburbs, or countryside?
- Do you have pets?
If you have pets, you’ll likely need to dust more—sometimes twice a week!
The answer to these questions changes how a home’s dusting schedule will look.
I don’t have pets, but if you do, you must dust some areas twice weekly. The more elements that create dust in your home, the more often you will dust.
Ways to reduce the dust in your home
DIY Dust Repellent Spray
Mix 1 cup water, 1/4 cup white vinegar, two tablespoons olive oil, and optional essential oils (lemon is my favorite!). Use a microfiber dusting cloth from E-cloth for best results.

Change Vacuum Filters Quarterly
This keeps your vacuum working efficiently and prevents dust from recirculating.
Use a Damp Duster
The Scrub Daddy Damp Duster is my go-to for trapping dust with ease.
Replace HVAC Filters Monthly
Set a reminder on your calendar to keep your air clean and dust-free.
Invest in an Air Purifier
This helps remove dust and allergens, creating the cleanest air possible for your home. We currently have the one pictured below, and I love it because I can also travel with it. But you will need multiple for larger spaces.
The whole home ones worked great, too. But are in an investment. This is the Shark Whole Home one I recommend. My allergist recommended it to us as well.

Grab this bed vacuum cleaner
Your mattress could be a hotel for dust mites and allergens. With us shredding dead skin cells at night and fine dust that can collect inside the mattress, it’s a great tool to help. You can also use it on pillows, stuffed animals, couches, and more. If you have pets and kids, it’s really important. This one is the top-rated one on Amazon. You will be surprised on the gross stuff that will come out.
Clean your portable fans with a car vent/blind cleaner
Our small portable fans get a lot of build-up due to the dust they collect. But even if you remove the top part, the central unit still needs to be cleaned. I found the best way to clean this area is by using a car vent/blind dust cleaner. It works so well. You can grab one from Target here.
Keep your blinds dust-free and easy to clean
Some people hate laundry well, and I hate dusting blinds, but this tool makes it so much easier.
