Today I wanted to share 5 easy steps to help you declutter a medicine cabinet in 10 mins.

Step 1.

Is to pull everything out. We need to be able to see everything we own.

Step 2.

Sort it out using the S.P.A.C.E method, which stands for

Sort

Purge

Assign a home

Containerize

Equalize

Find a counter, area in your home, and place all the stuff in your medicine cabinet where you can see it all. Sort like items together. Then discard all expired medication. Next, decide on its new home.

Think about how often you use medication/vitamins etc. The most used ones should be easy to reach, displayed in front, and easy to put back.

Then you want to containerize everything. Organizing your medicine cabinet can be done in a few ways.

Notes

Organizing hack tip: If you have your medicine cabinet in the kitchen as I do. One of the best tools to organize your medication is with a lazy susan like this one.

Best medicine organizers and storage containers

Depending on where your medicine cabinet is located or where you live. You may need a few organizers to help keep everything neat once you have taken the time to declutter.

As I mentioned above, my favorite medicine cabinet location now is in my kitchen. Because I can store things high up away from my children. And I can sort by shelf. And currently, I am using dollar tree wire shelves. When are totally working for me. I just change this at the end of 2021 so I will live with it a while to see how it goes.

But I didn’t always have this luxury. In my apartments, I have a skinny medicine cabinet and no under-storage sink. And in my condo, I had no medicine cabinet but under the storage sink but still in the bathroom.

These are some great medicine storage container options:

Why you shouldn’t store your medicines in your bathroom

When most people think of a medicine cabinet or vanity, they think the bathroom. It’s common in many households as the go-to place to store their medications.

But did you know this is the worst place to store them?

If you have ever read the label of your medication, it says to store it in a cool, dry place. Well… the bathroom is quite the opposite of that.

The heat and moisture in your bathroom will cause your medication to be less potent and expire sooner than intended.

As a mom, I prefer to store the medication in the kitchen because it keeps it in a higher place out of reach for my kids.

How often should you empty your medicine cabinet?

Honestly, I think once a year is a good enough time frame. Most medications have a year or more expiration time frame.

But I will say the best time to empty your medicine cabinet is during the fall season. Right before the cold/flu season hits and during the time of the year where you may find yourself reaching for more cold ezze.

I love using it as a reminder for back to school as well. Because I also keep all my essential oils in the medicine cabinet as well.

How to discard expired medication

After removing all the expired medication from your medicine cabinet, look into the guideline below on what your next steps should be.

The FDA provides guidance on how to dispose of certain medications properly. To be on the safe side, be sure to read them. It’s a quick read.

There are two programs through where you can give medications too.
