Make your habits easy
People often ask me how I keep the counters clean. I use the microwave minute trick. Popped something in the microwave for a couple of minutes. Instead of waiting around for it, I tackle things on the counter. I return them to their homes before the timer is up. Waiting for food to boil and cook throws out things that don’t belong on the counter.
Keeps things in close proximity to where you will use them
Keeping bathrooms clean when you have multiple kids is exhausting. However, I keep cleaning supplies under the sink in my bathroom so I can wipe the sink as my kids play in the bathtub. If you design your environment to achieve the results you want, then it becomes easy to do so. Please stop trying to find time to clean and instead create it so that you can see the pockets of time.
Keep an ongoing donation bin
The idea of having to create a decluttering session sometimes is overwhelming. Instead, create a declutter bin or multiple decluttering bins throughout the house and toss things in all week long that are no longer useful, then pair that task with trash day. Also, remember to take the donation bin out.
Set a reset timer on your phone or with your AI assistant, like Google Home
Setting yourself up for success is a lot easier than digging yourself out of the mess. Add timers to remind you to reset your home and for the kids, too. Build it into your daily routine.
Add fiction to the habits you are trying to break
Suppose you catch yourself doom-scrolling instead of cleaning/tidying. Consider setting a limit on your social media use to help you stay on track.
Instead of heading to Target to get a “few things,” opt for the Target pick up option to avoid impulse buying, adding clutter to your home, and spending way more time than you should in the stores.
