You are a mom who is trying to raise healthier kids and wants to find products that help eliminate health issues. For example, cleaning with Clorox is horrible for me especially because of my asthma. Not to mention how bad it is for the environment.
About two years ago I started my journey in finding products to help me simplify the health challenges I faced as a mom. I call this a journey because every day I learn more and take a step in the right direction.
I am sure you have heard the words “knowledge is power”. You gain power by being able to choose how you want to live your life and raise your kids. You want fewer chemicals and better options.
False advertisement in cleaning products
The consumer world does not make it easy now and days to truly know if the products you are purchasing are non-toxic. They label things with false advertisement and people just think because the label says (Organic) it’s the better option. You need to read the ingredients and start to learn which ones are synthetic.
There is also a belief that the more cleaning products you have the better clean your home will be. Which leads to clutter under the kitchen sink. You have so many bottles of cleaners that some get lost and you forget you even had them. You then purchase more wasting your money.
The favorite I have seen recently is companies being bold with using the word “essential oil infused”. That one gets me every time. But it works for their marketing campaign. It gets people to buy products.
Why are household cleaning products dangerous?
Cleaning product companies inadequately disclose their ingredients. They use generic words like “fragrance”. The chemicals they are using can be skin irritants, cancer-causing, and can have respiratory effects. Yet, they don’t properly list them.
The United States consumer product safety commission offers guidelines for chemicals/ingredients. However, there are still many cleaning agents that are harmful to you that are allowed.
That’s why in the 1800s and into the 1900s the organic movement begin. It started with farming issues and food-related concerns. However, throughout the years it spread awareness and in the 2000s it really surged.
In the 2000s, the worldwide market for organic products (including food, beauty, health, body care, and household products, and fabrics) grew rapidly. More countries established formal, government-regulated Organic certification. Monitoring and challenging certification rules and decisions became a regular, high profile aspect of activists in the organic movement.
Cleaning product companies love to boost their sales by making their products smell good. They are using one of your five senses to influence your decision to buy. Personally, I can’t even walk down the cleaner isle, my head starts to hurt with all the smells and gross stuff.
Yet, contrary to all those cleaning products you can clean your home better and safer with a simple household staple like vinegar. Something most people can’t stand the smell of, but it cleans better and kills more germs than your “ocean breeze” cleaner. Which kills you more than it does your house germs.
Beginning the decluttering process of your cleaners
As a child, my elders swore by Clorox, Windex, and Fabuloso. I mean my grandmother’s house was white tile, white counters, white cabinets you get the point.
Some of the cleaning products you use/choose are probably something that was past on to you. I know that this was the case for me. This began the process of decluttering what was taught to me.
This was a mindset shift and also a huge learning curve. Our parents meant well but they lacked the knowledge we now have.
If you are Hispanic like me you will find the cleaner Fabuloso as one of the top cleaning products in a Latin home. You will know if someone has just cleaned the house cause you will smell it a mile away!
If you view their page, Fabuloso advertises using the following words “irresistible fragrance”. I wonder why that is…
You see using one of those 5 senses again to sell their product.
Fabuloso though is one of the worst cleaning products on the planet. Don’t hate me my Latin peeps or anyone else who likes this product. I am just giving it to you straight.
Declutter your cleaning products?
Getting rid of your toxic cleaners in a progressive way is the best way to start. I started with the most toxic cleaner and then moved on to the next.
First, you need to take inventory of all the cleaners you have. Then you will begin the switching process.
There are many greener and healthier products on the market but you still need to research them and review the ingredients. Many people enjoy an all-purpose cleaner to get the majority of the housework done. An all-purpose cleaner can do most jobs without fail and keep your house in tip-top shape.
During your decluttering and switching process you can begin to research ingredients. You can do this by using The Environmental Working Group cleaning guide and you can also use an awesome app called THINKdirty.
One of the cleaning products I chose to use as an all-purpose cleaner is Young Livings Thieves Household cleaner. I fell in love with this household cleaner after using many other green cleaners.
Using Essential Oils to clean your home
The world of Essential Oils is a vast one but I truly love essential oils and all the health benefits they have for your over all health. Essential oils boost immune systems unlike toxic cleaners which provoke respiratory issues. Essential oils can clean and destroy certain microbes like bacteria, fungus and viruses because of the plant-based compounds they are made of.
Essential oils are very potent and a little bit goes a long way. For example, in this picture, I show you a couple of sizes of Thieves Cleaner that I have.
The bottle is a 14.4 oz bottle which I use as an all-purpose cleaner.
This little bottle is so powerful it lasts me six months to almost a year before I even have to buy more to clean my entire home.
It’s ultra-concentrated and you must dilute it before you use it. It is a huge cost savings when it comes to my cleaning products. Since one bottle goes a long way. It cost $22.50 for the 14.4 oz bottle and I buy only a few other natural cleaning items to compliment my bottle. Such Vinegar and baking soda.
What’s in the Thieves Cleaning solution?
Thieves is an exclusive oil blend made by the Young Living Essentials Oil company. One of the top pure essential oil companies in the world.
The cleaner consist of the following :
- Sodium 2-methyl sulfolaurate
- Eugenia caryophyllus† (Clove) bud oil
- Citrus limon† (Lemon) peel oil
- Tetrasodium glutamate diacetate, Cinnamomum zeylanicum† (Cinnamon) bark oil
- Rosmarinus officinalis† (Rosemary) leaf oil
- Eucalyptus radiata† leaf oilDisodium 2-sulfolaurate
- †100% pure, therapeutic-grade essential oil
You can use it virtually anywhere even around your pets. Be mindful though to remember essential oils are VERY powerful. You should always be sure you are diluting well and taking care that the oils don’t get ingested by your pets or children.
Also, you need to know the powerful plant-based products can have adverse effects if not properly used. So if you are pregnant, have pets, infants, etc. As with anything in life, too much of a good thing can be bad.
Irresistible Fragrance of essential oils
Essential oils are so fragrant and will make your house smell amazing. While you are cleaning or even after. You can diffuse oils just like air fresheners. My favorite oil to diffuse to freshen the air in my home is Purification from Young Living.
So going back to the Thieves household cleaner my husband says it smells like Christmas. Makes me laugh every time. What he is referring too is the combo of clove and cinnamon.
I like to think of it this way. If you have ever used Pine-sol it has a distinct smell. That’s what Thieves is like. So in my home, it smells like Christmas whenever mom cleans.
Clutter free under the kitchen sink
Since switching to Thieves as an all purpose cleaner I have less under the cabinets. I was able to get rid of Windex, Bathroom cleaners, soft-scrubs, floor cleaners, and Clorox.
Instead of throwing everything out that I had, I used it up and once the bad product is gone. I never purchased it again. You can though just start fresh and throw everything out but be-sure to treat they chemicals like they truly are.
You can look for places to properly dispose of chemicals. There are organizations that can guide you in how to do just that. One is called Earth911. Another option is to check your village or town. You can also find places like Waste Management.
Keeping your bottles organized under your sink will be a lot easier to handle since you will have less to store. Essential oils do require that you use glass bottles instead of plastic because the oils can and will
deteriorated the plastic.
Some options you can use to create your new line of essential oil cleaners is by using amber bottles or colt blue bottles.
They come with fun labels and the color is so pretty. I like to keep bottles in every bathroom to help the cleaning process go faster.
Cleaner home and better health
Making the switch to cleaner and non-toxic ways to clean your home is invigorating. Decluttering all the extra stuff is so freeing. Less is more. Also, the cost savings it a huge plus.
Lastly, you are providing a better future for your kids by protecting the planet with less harmful chemicals.
Taking baby steps to declutter your home and products will help you achieve the goal of leading healthier lives overall.
Have you recently switched cleaners in your home? What did you switch too? Are you an essential oil beginner ? I would love to hear about your journey.
